Abstract

Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH) became ill after he had returned to Madina from the Farewell Pilgrimage. He was suffering from headaches that some times became unbearable and a high fever. The health of Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH) suddenly deteriorated. According to ‘Ᾱisha,  Muḥammad(PBUH) said in a low voice "Lᾱ ilᾱha illallᾱh, how hard it is to give away your soul", and then he abandoned his soul in her arms saying: "al-rafῑq al-a‘lᾱ" (to the most divine friend). The death of Prophet Muḥammad (PBUH) deeply saddened all the ṣaḥᾱba. Indeed it was the first historical crisis faced by the Islamic community. So great was the love of the Companions for the Prophet that they could not part with his love. Many narrations related to this great tragedy have been mentioned in the collection of  ḥadith.  This article provides an overview of these narrations that either these are Ṣaḥiḥ or Ḍa‘ῑf.
