Islamic Values in “Zavia” written by Ashfaq Ahmad: An Evlauation

Abstract

“Zaviah” is Ashfaq Ahmed’s masterpiece, who himself was a known writer, philosopher, educator, novelist, and an orator., it projects the concepts of “Haqooq-ul-Ibad” (Human Right) and “Khidmat-e-Khalq” (Social Welfare). It is inherently a spiritual discourse which eloquently brings forth the social, political, economic, and societal issues. The author dissects those malaises like a skillful physician and then, offers a respite to heal the wound and cure the ailment. In this article, emphasis has been laid on Ashfaq Ahmed’s exquisite use of analogies, his impeccable art of storytelling and his magical ability to mold language and words at his own will and in such a manner that the reader is left spellbound. He weaves glorious little tales of love, human to human bonds, the relationship between man and God and the utmost need to repress our egos, thereby showing the path to success which is paved with good intentions coupled with good deeds. Zaviah affects our individual and societal narratives. It takes into stride the cause and effects of the burning issues of modern man e.g., depressions, anxiety and materialistic urges. It further illustrates how the oriental values like human interaction, spiritual growth and need to connect to our origins can help us steer through the murky waters of present materialistic and hedonistic times.It also discusses the effects of such practices in lives of individuals as well as nations. Zaviah holds a significant place in Urdu Literature. It is an illustrious creation of Ashfaq ahmed which encompasses not just his own life lessons but some precious pearls of wisdom of Sufism as well. Hence, it enjoys highest stature among all of Ashfaq Ahmed’s works. Through Zaviah, the author has spread the message of positivity and reformation of the society. Therefore, through this article an attempt has been made to inculcate the concept of positive thinking and betterment of the society. Moreover, it will also help in determining the true place of Zaviah in the literary realms. I am hopeful that this article will turn out to be a valuable addition in Urdu Literature.
